Measuring Image Quality

Measuring Image Quality

Visual Evaluation

An experienced optical engineer can tell a great deal about a lens by just by looking at the image. A full discussion of this topic could fill a book, but here are some tips.

3-bar Contrast

The classic USAF-1951 target is often used to determine the smallest feature size that can be resolved by a lens. Though still widely used, the test suffers from subjectivity. Different operators may disagree on which feature is "resolved."

PixelScope OpticStudio™ allows numerical measurment of 3-bar contrast, removing the issue of operator subjectivity.

MTF

MTF, or "Modulation Transfer Function" describes the ability of a lens to image targets of various sizes in a single plot. MTF is now the de-facto standard for describing image quality.

PixelScope-OpticStudio supports measurement of MTF from a variety of targets, including pinhole, narrow line, and edge. The new 2DMTF tool simultaneously measures MTF and EFL in both the X and Y directions withjust a few mouse clicks. Read more
